The 280 by 120 cm map includes applications for the North and South Poles of the Earth's satellite. It contains 13,000 craters, 81 basins, 14 types of geological structures, and 17 types of rocks. The map is based on data from the Chinese lunar program, the geological chronology of the Moon has been clarified and the list of minerals has been updated. The use of a high-resolution map made it possible to optimize the criteria for classifying rocks.
Yang Zhiming, Director of the institute, noted that the new map provides an important scientific basis for the construction of a lunar research station and the selection of spacecraft landing sites. The work also contributes to the study of the evolution of the Solar system. The map will become a key tool for China's future lunar missions, including the Taikonauts landing planned for 2030.
Russia and China are actively cooperating in the space sector. In 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on ratification of the agreement with China on the establishment of an International Scientific Lunar Station. The project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2028, involves remote management of a complex of research facilities. The new map will be an important element for coordinating efforts within this joint project.
