China and Russia discuss participation in Arctic projects

ПОРА

The Arctic Development Project Office (PORA) is conducting a business visit of the Russian delegation to China dedicated to the development of technological and scientific cooperation in the Arctic.

The mission program includes negotiations, round tables and visits to high-tech enterprises and research centers in Qingdao and Shanghai.

In Qingdao, the program of the visit included enterprises specializing in low-carbon technologies for shipping, robotic production systems and intelligent logistics.

Shanghai hosts meetings with representatives of leading Chinese analytical and research centers working in the Arctic, as well as negotiations with engineering companies specializing in the construction of transport infrastructure in permafrost conditions.

According to Maxim Dankin, CEO of PORA, today the Arctic is becoming one of the key spaces for the formation of new international technological and logistical links.

"The world is undergoing a fundamental restructuring of global economic and logistics chains. It is today that a new global logistics architecture and the logistics contour of the Arctic are being formed, in which the importance of regional hubs and flexible intermodal solutions is increasing. In these conditions, it is especially important to build direct cooperation between Russian and Chinese companies, research centers and analytical structures to find joint technological solutions," Maxim Dankin emphasizes.

According to Dankin, the visit allows to create the basis for long-term cooperation in the field of climate technologies, transport infrastructure, shipping and engineering solutions for work in high latitudes.

Ekaterina Serova, Director of the International Department of PORA, emphasizes that the Chinese side shows great interest in joint work in the field of Arctic technologies and climate research.

"During the visit, we see the serious interest of Chinese partners in developing applied cooperation with Russia in a wide range of areas, from the digitalization of marine logistics and decarbonization of shipping to construction technologies on permafrost. For many Chinese organizations, the Russian Arctic is considered as a space for long–term joint research and technological projects," says Ekaterina Serova.

Following the visit, the parties plan to continue contacts in the format of expert exchanges, joint research and development of new mechanisms for scientific and technical cooperation in the Arctic. Special attention is expected to be paid to issues of sustainable shipping, climate monitoring, the formation of carbon markets and the use of renewable energy technologies in the Arctic.
